I make performances that investigate the limits and the possibilities of the archive, that revel in retelling and remixing, and that challenge fair use, copyright, and creative transformation.

		<description>

I love to work collaboratively with a company of artists to make performances. Devising is often the word used for working in this model, but I prefer to emphasize the necessity of the collective over the mechanics of making. I take this approach in my role as Joint Artistic Director of the for/word company; I’ve also worked regularly in the devising model with Available Light Theatre, and as an artist-in-residence working with students as well.

In this work, I have been inspired by the thinking of adrienne maree brown in Emergent Strategy. Embodied presence, deep listening, and the courage to adapt are essential to “move at the speed of trust” in collaborative making processes.

Ulmus Ohioana

Drawn from the letters of William “Hike” Currin, the first Denison student to die in WWI, and Lily Bell Sefton, one of the first women to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry in the United States, Ulmus Ohioana is about teaching and ambition, longing and chemistry, regret and waste. It’s about the brevity of our lives, and about their simultaneous indelibility.

Little Book

Little Book is a comedy about writing, and therefore it’s a play about procrastination, disappointment, hypochondria, unrequited love, and blind hope. It’s about why the semicolon is way sexier than the dash. And why children’s literature matters.

	Administrator

I believe that academic administration is a profoundly creative act, and to do it I draw on the skills in collaboration, facilitation, storytelling, and project management that I honed in my creative career.
I am currently Dean and Director at The Ohio State University at Marion. In that role, I lead a regional campus deeply engaged in the land grant mission of the instituion and focused on student-focused programs, mentorship, and community collaborations.
That sounds like it’s a far way away from making performance or teaching to transgress, I know. However, I aim to bring everything I have learned as a teacher and a maker to evolving the systems and structures in which teaching and learning happen, including a serious commitment to wonder, delight, curiosity, and joy.

Previously, I was Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at The New School, where I managed, implemented, and improved institution-wide academic affairs processes in academic policy, academic integrity, academic standing, and academic scheduling, and lead initiatives to evaluate and better align academic affairs areas with university mission and vision.
I was also Associate Provost and Dean of Academics at Columbus College of Art &#38;amp; Design. There, I was responsible for driving the strategic development and transformation of undergraduate and graduate degrees across shared curricular models, as well as youth, adult enrichment, and career development programs. As part of my work there, I was instrumental in launching the Women of Color Equity Design Institute as a collaboration amongst CCAD, Zora's House, the Women's Fund of Central Ohio, and JP Morgan Chase.

	Scholar

As a scholar, I am guided by a fascination with the limits and uses of the archive, as well as with the cultural significance of popular entertainments; to that end, my work in theater history has been calibrated to put “important” dramatic texts on equal footing with fairground entertainment, blackface minstrelsy, melodramatic potboilers, vaudeville, or medicine shows in order to demonstrate the ways in which popular performance has both reflected and reshaped its culture.

Much of my published work focuses on contemporary theater, including especially the work of Chuck Mee, but also the pervasive (and damaging) tensions between art and entertainment in theater production, criticism, and history.

My scholarly work has been published in TDR, the Journal of American Drama and Theatre, Theatre Journal, Theatre Survey, Angels in the American Theater: Patrons, Patronage, and Philanthropy (ed. Robert Schanke, 2007), and Public Theatres and Theatre Publics (ed. Sara Freeman and Robert Shimko, 2012).&#38;nbsp;My scholarly essays are available on academia.edu.

My 2008 article “A Theatrical Race: Constance Rourke, American Culture, and Popular Performance” was awarded the 2009 American Society for Theatre Research’s Kahan Scholar’s Prize.

I served as Editor of Theatre/Practice, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal created to encourage, recognize, and disseminate rigorous, high-quality scholarship in embodied practice and practice as research in theatre and performance from 2015-2019.

	Teacher

My greatest strength as a teacher is getting my students to jump before they think they’re ready, to ask bold questions, and to capture that wild work in their art and scholarship.

My teaching credo is this: waiting for permission or for the right moment, waiting until we know enough or think we deserve it--these delays insulate us from the failures we will learn from and protect us from the risks we must take.

I’ve won several awards as a teacher, and I’ve been lucky enough to know quite a few great teachers who have shaped my approach. My pedagogy is informed by a blend of bell hooks and Paolo Friere and Liz Lerman and adrienne maree brown alongside the pragmatics of Therese Huston and James Lang.

My teaching is equally informed by the many teachers I have taught, been taught by, or taught alongside of including John Schmor, Elizabeth Wellman, Tom Postlewait, Ron Rybkowski, Karie Miller, Dionne Custer Edwards, Kelly Malec-Kosak, Danielle Julian Norton, Michael Kellner, Michelle Herman, and Aviva Neff.&#38;nbsp;I’ll also say this: great teaching is founded on great curriculum design, and I am committed to the intentional scaffolding and formative assessments that make it possible for the collegiate classroom to truly be a space for the practice of freedom.

I regularly offer workshops in playwriting, adaptation, devising, and writing artist’s statements to high schools, colleges, and professional organizations. Contact me for more information.
